Black Bear NIL Collective Anchors Presence in Alfond Arena with Signing of Forward Mackenzie Podewell
ORONO, ME — February 12th, 2026 — The Black Bear NIL Collective, the premier Name, Image, and Likeness entity supporting University of Maine student-athletes, is thrilled to announce the official signing of Women’s Ice Hockey forward Mackenzie Podewell. This historic partnership marks the first hockey player to join the collective, signaling a bold expansion of support for UMaine’s storied ice hockey programs.
Podewell, a dynamic freshman forward hailing from Wheaton, Illinois, has become a staple of the Black Bears’ offensive rotation. Known for her high hockey IQ, relentless work ethic, and ability to create scoring opportunities in high-pressure situations, Podewell represents the “Maine-tough” spirit that defines UMaine Athletics. Since arriving in Orono, she has been a consistent presence on the ice, contributing both as a playmaker and a defensive asset.
The addition of Podewell to the Black Bear NIL roster highlights the collective’s mission to empower student-athletes across all varsity sports, ensuring they have the resources to succeed both on and off the ice while strengthening the bond between the team and the local Orono community.
Jackson Leonard, General Manager of the Black Bear NIL Collective, issued the following statement:
“This is big news for Black Bear NIL. We’re proud to welcome Mackenzie Podewell as the first UMaine hockey player to join our collective. There’s no better way to begin our presence inside Alfond Arena than by reinforcing our commitment to supporting all men’s and women’s varsity sports at the University of Maine.
This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without Joseph Baldacci. His generous contribution helped make today happen. Thank you, Joe, for your leadership, your belief in our mission, and your continued support of UMaine student-athletes and our community.”
The Black Bear NIL Collective continues to bridge the gap between student-athletes and the passionate fans, alumni, and businesses that make Black Bear Nation unique. By providing a platform for athletes like Podewell to build their personal brands, the collective ensures UMaine remains a competitive destination for top-tier talent.
